Aerosmith - Rag Doll

Aerosmith - Rag Doll - Meaning of the song

Like many other Aerosmith songs, this one is about sex. Most of the lyrics were written by Steven Tyler and Jim Vallance, who is a Canadian songwriter whose credits include "Summer Of '69" and several other Aerosmith songs, including "Deuces Are Wild." Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry came up with the riff and Vallance with the bass line.

The lyrics, "Never see you leaving by the back door... man" are a reference to the blues song "Back Door Man." The line has a double meaning, as the girl has so much going for her that she doesn't have to sneak around, but the singer is willing to be her "back door man," which is the guy who sneaks in to see her.

"Rag doll" was originally called "Rag Time," a title inspired by the New Orleans feel to the music and by Steven Tyler's assortment of scarves. As detailed in Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith, Geffen Records guru John Kalodner loved the song but hated the title and subject matter, insisting that "Rag Time" means nothing to kids. After rejecting many other suggestions provided by Tyler and Vallance, he called for help, hiring the hit songwriter Holly Knight to fly to Vancouver to work on the song. She came up with the idea to change the title to "Rag Doll," and received a songwriting credit for her efforts.

Rag doll - Lyrics

Rag Doll livin' in a movie

Hot tramp Daddy's little cutie

You're so fine they'll never see ya leavin' by the back door, mam

Hot time get it while it's easy

Don't mind come on up and see me

Rag Doll baby won't you do me like you done before

I'm feelin' like a bad boy

Mm just a like a bad boy

I'm rippin' up a Rag Doll

Like throwin' away an old toy

Some babe's talkin' real loud

Talkin' all about the new crowd

Try and tell me of an old dream

A new version of the old scene

Speak easy on the grape vine

Keep shufflin' in a shoe shine

Old tin lizzy do it till you're dizzy

Give it all ya got until you're put out of your misery

Yes I'm movin'

Yes I'm movin'

Get ready for the big time

Tap dancing on a land mine

Yes I'm movin'

Yes I'm movin'

Old tin lizzy do it till you're dizzy

Give it all ya got until you're put out of your misery

Rag Doll livin' in a movie

Hot tramp Daddy's little cutie

You're so fine they'll never see ya leavin' by the back door, mam

Hot time get it while it's easy

Don't mind come on up and see me

Rag Doll, baby won't ya do me, baby won't ya do me,

baby won't ya do me like you done before

Yes I'm movin'

Yes I'm movin'

Get ready for the big time

Get crazy on the moon shine

Yes I'm movin'

I'm really movin'

Sloe Gin Fizzy, do it till you're dizzy

Give it all ya got until you're put out of your misery
